Last minute fixes

There were a few problems in finishing the Stephen F. Austin statue. It turned out the long rifle that Austin holds was about a foot shorter than it was supposed to be, but they got it fixed and now the statue is awaiting last-minute cosmetic touches like priming and painting before it's all done. Posted by Picasa

Mr. Warneke with Austin's head

Mr. Warneke, who chaired the statue project, was kind enough to pose for this picture after the head of Stephen F. Austin was delivered to the park site in Angleton. Posted by Picasa

Easy does it

My daughter, a long time ago when she was 3.

Alright.

Antiques, art & beer in Shiner, TX

Anderson Cooper.

The old Varsity Theater, on The Drag in Austin. After its days as a theater, it became a record store, but now apparently it's vacant.

A view of Lake Austin.

Surfside Beach, Tx., after Rita

Surfside Beach is real popular with surfers cause the surf is better there than in Galveston. There's a real serious erosion problem, though, as the following pictures will illustrate.

I don't think this beach house is long for this world.

Beach house for rent. Reasonable terms.

Boldly, into the breach.

Bulkheads like these supposedly are illegal. Sure, it'll protect your property but it doesn't do anything for your neighbor.

An apt symbol for beach living in Surfside Beach, Tx.

Hurricane humor.

Surfin' Surfside.

Mounds of small debris that looked like bamboo were pretty much everywhere on the beach.

These small, thin sticks look like bamboo.

Stretching is always advisable before surfing.

Stepping lightly on the way to the water.

Trying to hold back Mother Nature. Suckers!

Open sewer.

This house is on the landward side of Beach Drive.

This structure is obviously on the public beach right-of-way but the state is taking a hands-off approach.

If you didn't have a bulkhead, the storm surge scoured out your slab.

The Stephen F. Austin statue, Angleton, Tx

The statue will be surrounded by a park. For more information, see stephenfaustin.org.

The statue as seen from the railroad overpass.

It takes a big crane to put a big statue together.
